The Great Basin Observatory is a joint effort of six entities: Great Basin National Park, the Great Basin National Park Foundation, University of Nevada-Reno, Western Nevada College, Southern Utah University, and Concordia UNiversity.
The University of Nevada Reno is one of the nation’s top public research universities. The observatory will enable UNR to expand opportunities for students in the astrophysical sciences. www.unr.edu
Western Nevada College in Carson City, Nevada is home to the Jack C. Davis Observatory; their experience will be invaluable to the development of the Great Basin Observatory. www.wnc.edu/observatory
Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah is expanding its astronomy program wit the addition of two new teaching positions. SUU will use the GBO extensively to support undergraduate astronomical research opportunities in both remote access and on-site modes to build on their undergraduate astronomy program. www.suu.edu
Concordia University in Irvine, California plans to integrate the unique advantages of GBO's superb, high altitude, low-humidity, dark sky astronomical observing conditions into its undergraduate science curricula. www.cui.edu
Great Basin National Park, established in 1986, offers astronomy programs throughout the summer, inspiring visitors to learn about the cosmos and the importance of dark night skies. The park was recently named an International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark-Sky Association (www.darksky.org). Learn more about Great Basin at www.nps.gov/grba.
The Great Basin National Park Foundation, established in 1998, supports the mission and programs of Great Basin National Park. Its volunteer Board of Directors come from many walks of life: law; education; banking; energy; state, federal and tribal government; and outdoor recreation. The Foundation has provided significant financial support to projects including trail improvements, visitor center exhibits, oral histories, and environmental education tools. The Foundation is the primary supporter of the Park’s nationally recognized Night Skies Program. www.greatbasinfoundation.org
