First Light

The Great Basin Observatory's "First Light" was celebrated on Thursday, August 25, 2016 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. The dedication ceremony included addresses from Great Basin National Park staff, Great Basin Foundation and GBO board members, U.S. Representative for Nevada Cresent Hardy, and Nevada's Governor Brian Sandoval. The event also included the burying of a time capsule and the honoring of Elinor Tilford Charlseton (born in White Pine County in 1916) as Great Basin National Park's Centennial Ranger. Following the First Light, the park continued the celebrations with birthday cake, astronomy talks, and an evening Star Party.
